Who are these kids?
The children in the Grandma Cares program are
orphans of HIV/AIDS. All of the children are
school-age and only able to receive an education
with the funds provided by Grandma Cares. Some
of the children are novices and live at the local
temple, or “wat.”
Where do they live?
The kids in the Grandma Cares program live in Chiang Mai or
surrounding areas.
Why do they need help?
The HIV virus is spreading across
Northern Thailand, despite efforts by the
government to promote HIV/AIDS education.
Too often, children are orphaned by the
disease and are left in the care of their relatives—
in most cases their grandparents. Life in rural
Thailand is difficult. Thailand is still a developing country and the poverty
level is high, particularly in the country. The grandmothers who are left
to care for their grandchildren have little time and energy to provide for
themselves, let alone the sudden addition of a child to the household.

How does Grandma Cares support
these families?
Grandma Cares raises necessary funds
for the children and their families in
order to provide the kids with
nutritious meals, send them to school
and educational camps, buy school
uniforms and supplies, give Quality of
Life and Life Skills training, and
periodically present them with care
packages; which in the past have
included everything from food to
laundry soap to games to bikes.
What is Quality of Life Training?
While traditional education in skills such as reading and writing are
important, other lessons are also critical for a child to grow
into a balanced, healthy, productive member of society. In an environment
that is so unfortunately conducive to despair, depression, and anger, it is
essential that the children learn to effectively channel their emotions.
Therefore, Grandma Cares provides training for both the children and
their caregivers in coping with grief and stress, anger management,
working in a community, and spiritual exercises in Raja Yoga. Thailand is
90% Buddhist, so the children are taught the basic Buddhist principles of
letting go of desires and worldly needs, meditation, how to release negative
emotions, and holding high moral standards. The grandmothers, or other
primary caregivers, are also given Quality of Life Training, which includes
sessions in child psychology, hygiene and first aid care, and support in
child-raising.
What is Life Skills Training?
Grandma Cares holds training sessions in agriculture, weaving and other
crafts, cooking, beauty services, and other vocations to help these families
to become financially independent from us. Our goal is to give the
families the tools they need to provide for themselves and to give the kids
the opportunity to break out of their family’s cycle of poverty.
Uplifting Thailand's future by giving the children a second chance at leading a positive, productive life
